Pilates History

The History Of Pilates

Pilates was originally an exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates after World War I to help soldiers and other injured patients who had been confined to bed rest for long periods of time recover muscle strength that has been lost while they were confined to bed. The history of Pilates as an exercise is really the history of Jose Pilates, or Joseph Pilates. The Pilates exercise method became very popular when it was realized that doing Joseph Pilates exercises would keep one fit without a lot of strenuous work. Joseph Pilates own history was rich in Zen meditation, martial arts, and other forms of fitness and exercise that had ancient roots. Combining all these elements he created the Pilates system. Hitler wanted Joseph Pilates to teach his exercises to the German army, but Pilates refused and left Germany. In New York City he opened his own exercise studio with his wife who was also a fitness enthusiast. His unique muscle training method was quickly adopted by the New York City ballet and other dancers who loved that the exercises built muscle tone and strength without adding bulk to the body. Ever since Pilates has been a favorite exercise for dancers and models.

Today Pilates training has never been more popular. There are exercise studios that offer Pilates classes, even traditional gyms now offer Pilates classes that usually have waiting list to get into. One of the reasons that Pilates is so popular is that almost anyone can do it. People who have health problems that prevent them from performing normal exercise routines and aeorobic exercise can do Pilates, usually without any modifications to the traditional Pilates movements. People who have trouble performing more traditional types of exercise are overjoyed at the results they see from Pilates. There are lots of different trainers who offer specialized Pilates training for people who have specific health training so it’s possible to find Pilates methods for people who have bad knees, people who have back backs, people who have bad ankles, no matter what the health problem there is a modified form of Pilates that will suit every person’s exercise needs.
