Pilates And Pregnancy

Is It Safe To Continue Pilates While Pregnant?

One of the most often asked questions is whether or not it’s safe for women to continue doing Pilates during pregnancy. It is safe to continue Pilates and Yoga practices during pregnancy as long as the pregnant woman is doing a modified Pilates or Yoga practice that is specifically designed for pregnant women. Performing a modified Pilates practice during pregnancy can actually be beneficial for a pregnant woman because performing Pilates exercises during pregnancy can strengthen the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles that loosen during pregnancy and can help make birth easier. It’s important to continue to exercise during pregnancy unless the doctor says not to because of a medical condition. Many women do like to continue doing some type of exercise to try and stay fit during pregnancy and Pilates and Yoga can be ideal exercises for pregnant women. Doing Yoga and Pilates during pregnancy has become quite trendy now, and many places offer Yoga and Pilates classes that are designed to be gentle for pregnant women. Women who work to stay fit during their pregnancies usually have an easier time taking off excess baby weight and tend to get back to their pre-baby weight faster so it can be very advantageous for a pregnant woman to take up a gentle Yoga or Pilates practice during pregnancy.

Modified Pilates And Yoga Practices Are Necessary During Pregnancy

When continuing to do a Pilates or Yoga practice during pregnancy it’s important to recognize that pregnant women need to practice a modified form of Pilates and Yoga. Normal Mari Winsor Pilates DVDs or other popular Pilates fitness DVDs can injure the baby so during pregnancy it’s important to follow a modified Pilates routine. There are many high quality Pilates and Yoga DVDs that are specifically designed for pregnant women and have modified poses and practices that are safe for pregnant women to perform. Many gyms and fitness centers also offer Pilates and Yoga classes specifically for pregnant women. When searching for Pilates + pregnancy DVDs make sure that the exercises have been modified for pregnant women. If there is any concern about the pregnancy or any reason that a pregnant woman shouldn’t’ be exercising then even modified Yoga and Pilates are not appropriate. Whenever there is a question about pregnancy and health, ask a doctor. Bring the doctor a copy of the DVD that is being considered and make sure that the doctor says that the poses are appropriate for the pregnant woman before starting the practice.
