A Pilates chair, like the Pilates Wunda chair, is a small 2 ft high chair designed to help align the body and provide resistance during Pilates exercises. Widely considered by Pilates instructors and enthusiasts to be the most challenging piece of Pilates equipment created to date, the Pilates chair is designed to stretch and strengthen some of the muscle groups that normally don’t get much of workout, even with Pilates. it consists of a seat and a footbar with attached springs. There are more than twenty different Pilates exercises that can be done more effectively in a Pilates chair and can build greater core strength. Even though the Pilates chair can be challenging it’s used frequently in physical therapy and is another example of the way in which physical therapy can cross over into fitness. The Wunda Pilates chair was originally created as a physical therapy tool, but doing Pilates exercises on a Wunda chair can also be a great way to get the most effective Pilates workout possible.

Because Pilates chairs are the next big thing in the world of Pilates, they are very expensive, ranging from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars. Because of the high price, most people don’t want to invest that much money in a Pilates chair for home use. However, many Yoga and Pilates studios are adding Pilates chairs to their studios and some even offer specialty Pilates classes using Pilates chairs where the cost of the class includes the use of a Pilates chair for the duration of the class. For many people, taking a Pilates chair class is a great way to find out if the chair will really help their Pilates practice before they think about paying a lot of money for a Pilates chair at home. Like any trend, the Pilates chair will soon be replaced by something else that will be the next big thing in Pilates, so some people might want to just take a chair Pilates class and not buy a chair for home Pilates use. Because a Pilates chair is more athletically challenging than the Pilates reformer and gives students a good cardio workout as well as a Pilates workout the Pilates chair will not be the right fitness equipment for every student. Students who have muscle weakness or are still beginners at Pilates might want to stick with a less physically demanding type of Pilates and wait until a fitness trainer or instructor thinks they are ready to take on a Pilates chair workout.
